Visions of Sugarplums (Or Gingerbread, perhaps?)

My 4 year-old grandson just said the other day, "Grandma, we need to make some gingerbread cookies." What amazed me is that he said this out of the blue, apparently remembering from last year that it's around this time of year that we bake these cookies.

I've been making gingerbread cookies every holiday season for some 20 years. I've suggested that maybe we don't need to do them again this year or that year, but the consensus is always, "Oh, but you have to!" Something about the smell of the spices baking, and the cheery appeal of the cookies... Perhaps it lightens some of those dreary winter days, reminding us that every season has its joys.

Knowing that my grandson already has fond memories of our holiday baking is one of those joys! I've got the recipe posted: Gingerbread Cookies, at pccuisine.com.

I love the dried fruit and nut decorations!

My son and I have created a tradition where we make a gingerbread house before Christmas and then I let him smash it with a rubber mallet on New Year's Eve.
